I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Leontios Gerasimou, a philanthropist, artist and visionary who together with his wife, has established a cafe bar and cultural centre in the heart of Old Nicosia. Their brainchild is a wonderful concept for this part of town, attracting the young generation and the art world and bringing life to the area.
It all began nine years ago, when Mr. and Mrs. Gerasimou decided to revamp an old building only metres away from the Green Line and turned it into a non-profit centre for screenings and other film-related events. It then became an open workshop for the children of the neighbourhood, mainly to provide support and guidance to poor, immigrant families living close by.
Now the Weaving Mill has opened its doors for people from all walks of life as it combines cafe culture with artistic and musical events. Hundreds of books line the walls, groups of students and artists gather here to catch up and bounce ideas back and forth via conversation, board games and music. Plus there is a busy schedule of concerts, screenings and jam sessions to keep the culture-hungry crowd occupied. For snacks, there are delicious sandwiches on offer as well as enticing desserts such as rizogalo (rice pudding) and Syrian mouhallabieh as well as daily specials.
