JAR - Gourmet Marmalades and Preserves

Kato Drys, Larnaca district

A Sunday trip to the countryside like no other - one visit to Elli's world of jams and preserves will make Kato Drys your favourite rural destination!

My dear friend and Cyprus Taste Tours partner Louisa invited us to Kato Drys to celebrate her birthday with a special brunch that is probably like no other on the island. If there is one reason you should visit Kato Drys village, it's Elli and her little home for the most amazing jams and chutneys.

With the recession in full swing on the island, there is an increasing amount of pocket-friendly options for eating out and at 10 euros per person, the breakfast / brunch on offer either at 10:30am or 1pm - depending on the seating you book - will carry you through til the evening for sure! It is a feast of homemade goodies all prepared with love and packed with natural goodness.

As we sat down on the balcony of Elli's little shop, opposite Kato Drys kafeneio (with the locals looking on with curiosity), we were truly overwhelmed by the selection of savoury and sweet delicacies as well as the unique taste of all the marmalades, jams and chutneys that complimented the scones, pastries, fresh bread and assorted cheeses before us.

And if that wasn't enough to satisfy our appetite, then the egg - sunny side up - and bacon hit the spot. Hard to choose but my fave treats were the banana and walnut cake and the yoghurt with banana, rum and hazelnut jam (one of the available flavours - fact!).

With so many different jars on the table, it was pretty tough choosing which to take home. For the moment, I've stocked up on the tropical fruit and Malibu jam, the mango and ginger chutney and the roasted pepper and chilli spread, the latter fantastic with anari or fresh village halloumi!

Elli and her mother are wonderful hosts, the village is beautiful for a walkabout after brunch and it's a great meeting point and a unique culinary experience that starts the day rather nicely. It's advisable to book as they are getting increasingly popular now on the weekends, especially with more and more blogs and sites raving about them. So get a group of six or more together and you will not be disappointed :)
