Larnaca is seriously catching up on the bar scene and finally, there is a new place strictly for all things vino. Oak Tree Wine Cellar is now not only a leading supplier of wines but also a wine bar option throughout the week.
Like a good wine, this place is still relatively new - it's been in operation for about six weeks - and needs its time to mature. The décor is a little bare - you can almost smell the fresh coat of paint and newly installed woodwork - and the service is a little on the slow side, however to give them credit, they have an impressive selection of wines and delicious accompanying treats that will certainly entice you. We were in the mood for red wine, so I got to try a full-bodied, spicy Chateaunauf du Pape and the fruity Speri Valpolicella.
A word of warning though: best to clarify with the waitress how much you will be paying - the Chateaunauf du Pape was 8.20eur a glass but I was unaware until the bill came, as the waitress asked me what I fancied and then presented me with a glass! Yes, it's a landmark grape variety but for Cyprus standards, it's still a little pricey.
Using the state-of-the-art Enomatic wine dispensers, you can sample any of the sixteen bottles available by the glass, that are changed by the week. Alternatively, you can visit the cellar next door and choose a bottle from a selection of 450 labels, with a small cost added to the shop price, to enjoy at your table. As a side dish, you can sample the finest cured meats or Italian and French cheeses, although the best option is to order a platter (small version is only 6 euros) which brings the best elements of the menu together with a range of light bites.
Although a novelty for Larnaca's nightlife, given Oaktree's established reputation islandwide for sourcing the world's best wines, it promises to do well in its new role as a bar destination.

Nov 2015 we are visiting Cyprus from the UK and wanted to buy some wine. Whilst walking in Larnaka we noticed the Oak tree and went to investigate. This shop / wine bar is a fantastic find. The director of wines.Sergios was very helpful and made our visit to the Oak Tree very interesting and pleasurable. We tasted a delicious ros`e Kir Yianni Rose 2014 & a sigalas assyrtiko white delicious and crisp. Enjoying ourselves we then had a cheese plate ...lovely with a little more wine. The following day we returned to enjoy the Beaujolais Nouveau evening tasting the wine with a delicious bowl of pasta. Thank you to Sergios we will be back next year. Janet & Frank
