I love Praha

Whether you're on a girlie holiday, a stag or with your loved one, Prague has something for everyone. It's commonly associated with binge-drinking but the food on the whole is superb and often just as affordable as the cheap beer! Among the many fantastic restaurants, here are three in the Old Town (Stare Mesto) that are equally excellent for you to visit:

1) Potrefena Husa
€10 / person
Hybernská, Praha 1
Tel: 224 243 631

This got recommended to me by Chris, an American living in Prague for many years and although it seems like any old corner pub, the food was surprisingly very good. And yes, the price quoted above is not a typo - you CAN have a meal and a drink for the equivalent of ten euros!

We had different dishes there, from their special 'Leffe' spare ribs, probably the best I've ever had [pictured above - the meat just fell off the bone], succulent fillet steak, tasty ghoulash and other delicacies and every dish was top-notch. We seemed to be the only foreigners there too so it was an opportunity to people-watch and observe the Czechs having a good time.

2) Zvonice
€40 / person
Jindřišská 832/1, Praha 1
224 220 009

Although it is pricey, this fantastic restaurant cannot be missed as the location, the food and the service are all perfect. Located on the 7th and 8th floor of a BELLTOWER, Zvonice offers a unique dining experience with traditional Czech dishes, whilst seated right next to a huge bell!

The waiter was incredibly attentive and guided us through the extensive menu and the wine list. We started off with homemade bread with a butter and tomato spread, we were also given a small shrimp appetiser and among the starters, we chose the sirloin steak and the goat's cheese salad with walnut foam (pictured below). We did get a bit carried away though with the ordering so we were quite full-up before the mains arrived!

All the dishes are wonderfully prepared and presented but from all the dishes I tried from the group, I would say my choice was definitely the best, and that's the cheeks of veal! Tender pieces of meat with the most scrumptious sauce and mashed potato with bacon on the side, made the traditional way. Make sure you book beforehand as it is popular with locals and visitors, and given that Prague is generally a value-for-money city, it's worth choosing Zvonice for one expensive night out.

3) Kolkovna Celnice
€20 / personV Celnici 4, Praha 1
Tel: 224 212 240

Kolkovna is actually a restaurant chain but don't let this put you off. This is a company that prides itself in good food and has invested alot in its decor, creating a cosy, warm atmosphere that is definitely worth checking out. We visited the Celnice Kolkovna which is situated in a quiet courtyard, only a stone's throw from Republic Square. Inside you will find lots of booths and alcoves for groups to sit and the walls are covered in antiques, memorabilia and other quirky artefacts.

The menu, true to Czech tradition, is quite meat-heavy with different types of game and many pork dishes on offer. A good sharer is the mixed grill which has all kinds of grilled meats served on a metal contraption with lots of different skewers that you can just pull out. I fancied a change from pork so went for the lamb shank that was slightly overcooked but otherwise very very tasty. And once again, we tucked into huge portions - another reason why I loved Prague. It was just one wholesome, hearty meal after another!
