Berlin Bites

Berlin - both avant-garde and steeped in history - although reunited for nearly thirty years, still holds the distinct vibes of East and West. It boasts fantastic art and historical exhibits and possibly the best graffiti and other forms of street art that you will ever come across. And the food is pretty yummy too.... here is a sample of the best places I visited for munching.

Marjellchen
Between €20-€30
9 Mommsenstrasse - Charlottenburg area
030 883 26 76
Open from 5pm daily

The best way to start your holiday in Berlin is to visit this cosy Charlottenburg restaurant that attracts hordes of local folk and tourists alike. It's well-known in Berlin for its hearty dishes, inspired by the recipes of Moravia, Masuria and other North-East German regions. However, this is ideal more for carnivore fans as the menu is pretty meat-dominated and includes different types of game such as hare, boar and stag.

I found the roast 'saddle of lamb' delicious thanks to its creamy rosemary sauce and I also got to try the Pommeranian stewed pork with yeast dumplings, drenched in an addictive prune sauce. If anything, it is worth going for its 40s-inspired decor, with antiques, portraits and baroque wallpaper covering the walls!

Suppenbörse
43, Dorotheenstrasse - off Friedrichstrasse
30 20455903
Open until 6pm (except Sundays)

If you happen to visit before May during which spring kicks in, Berlin is bloody cold! Which is why this place was ideal literally for a quick warm-up with their fantastic soups with all kinds of combinations!

I went for the ghoulash option with chunks of beef and lots of veg, but the Thai and other coconutty-type soups they have are also worth trying. It was so packed with people queuing from outside, you have to quickly gulp it down at the stands beside the window but it's a great pit-stop in between Mitte shopping or sight-seeing.

'Eat the World' Food Tours

Given that I am now involved in food tours here in Cyprus, I wanted to do some underground research into what Berlin has to offer for avid foodies and 'Eat the World' is incredibly popular across Germany for its food stops and introduction to various neighbourhoods, depending on your choice. I wanted an insight into the Friedrichschain area in the East and the tour consisted of seven stops, with lots of information in between.

We were shown round beautiful delicatessens and patisseries, a chocolate-making shop, a juice bar and it was a window into the multi-cultural side of Berlin, meeting shop owners and restauranteurs of all nationalities.

At 30 euros per person, it will definitely not fill you up for lunch. At most places we had small portions in order to keep moving however it does give you a great 'taste' of everyday life in Berlin's backstreets.

Felix Austria
Around 20 per person
26 Bergmanstrasse - Kreuzberg area
03061675451
Open everyday, for lunch and dinner

After carrying out an 'Alternative Berlin Tour', our guide Matt recommended his favourite local for traditional Austrian fare and I just had to check it out. Felix Austria is hidden in a very quiet Kreuzberg sidestreet but once you enter, you find that it is heaving with customers, with waiters whizzing past. It was packed when we visited but thankfully, the smoking room at the back had a table free and apart from the occasional smoke ring floating past, it was much more chilled compared to the chaos in the front room.

The dishes vary depending on the daily specials but given that I visited in April, they had fresh white asparagus which I had never tasted before, served with their signature veal schnitzel that was divine. This was served after their beef sausage soup that you wished would never end as it was bursting with flavour!

Rogacki
145-146 Wilmersdorfer Strasse - Charlottenburg area
030 343 825 0
Open Mon - Fri until 7pm (Sat - 4pm), closed Sundays
www.rogacki.de

This place is a real gem for people-watching, seeing locals that truly appreciate good food, selecting their cured meats and cheese, picking out their chosen fish to take home, or standing at the bar with an ice-cold drink waiting for their chosen daily special to be whipped up for them! Every food-lover needs to visit this place - I happened to stop by for lunch before heading for the airport, for some good ol' fish n chips Berlin style!
